Child Development Certificate License   (15 credits)

The Certificate License in Child Development provides a basic academic foundation and professional development for education and teaching staff. An important professional credential, the certificate offers Head Start health workers an opportunity to advance their careers and serve children and families more effectively. A license is a "collegiate diploma". It is a post-secondary academic process of establishing the qualifications of professionals working in Child Development or Education.

Students are prepared to communicate effectively, learn and use new technology, think critically and creatively and demonstrate cultural awareness.  The courses are designed for students who intend to pursue advanced study in early childhood education or a related discipline.  The structure and curriculum of the CD Certificate are designed to complement the Child Development Associate (CDA) National Credentialing Program's Competency Standards .

The certificate has a required 480 hours of supervised fieldwork per course. The fieldwork will be supervised by University appointed staff.  A vital source of evidence of the candidate's skill is actual hands-on work as a teacher with children and families. The fieldwork/internship is an opportunity to learn through experience.  The fieldwork/internship offers the candidate an opportunity to see his/her practice in light of new knowledge from the CDC course work. Students are required to complete 480 hours of fieldwork prior to completion of the certificate program.

Requirements of program:

Complete 15 credit hours of training

Complete a general management course (3 credits)

Complete 480 clock hours of fieldwork in the education service area

Complete online examination and documentation process

Complete a Prior Learning Assessment portfolio packet

Pay license fee (License fees are determined by state in which student resides)
