Bachelor of Science Degree Program (Occupational)

 

Head Start Management

 

HS University offers a Bachelor of Occupational Science in Head Start Management to meet the needs of adult students who want to complete an BS in management before entering into the professional programs.

 

The Bachelor of Science curriculum provides a solid foundation and overview within the academic disciplines of communication, leadership, and other skills necessary for managing human and fiscal resources within the structure, culture and missions of any Head Start organization. The curriculum stresses skill development in the areas of performance systems, employment law, public relations, financial analysis, Head Start environment strategies and utilization of research findings.

 

This undergraduate degree program has a 54 credit required course of study, 33 credits are allocated to the Bachelor of Science/Management major.  18 credits to management entry coursework, and 3 credits to the integrating course.  Some courses have prerequisite requirements.

 

In addition to the Required Course of study, students must satisfy general education and Elective requirements to meet the 120 semester-credit minimums required for completion of the degree.

 

 Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of all program requirements, graduates will be able to:
   

1.

Demonstrate basic knowledge of management, human resources, performance standards, and Head Start
2. Organize thoughts and ideas and communicate, using proper professional writing techniques as well as verbal presentation skills, in a manner that can be easily understood in Head Start environment
3. Demonstrate a responsible attitude in relationships with staff, family, management, policy groups and local community partners and leaders
4. Solve problems related to various aspects of management including fiscal, finance and operations
5. Understand and practice managerial functions of planning, organizing, leading and directing, as well as the nature and responsibilities of the changing roles of Head Start managers
6. Have a working knowledge of Performance Standards, Head Start Act and how to develop area plans, including health, disabilities, education, professional development and program design.
7. Demonstrate an ability to define management problems, examine alternatives, decide on the best course of action, and submit written reports to directors and board.
8. Develop an understanding of the decision-making process and demonstrate effective, ethical and legal decision making
9. Develop a personal philosophy of Head Start goals, and Head Start Management Initiative, enabling the graduate student to perform as a manager, coach, leader, staff specialist or as a team member
10. Develop an understanding of the nature of change, how to manage change and how to adapt to the accelerating Head Start environment
11. Demonstrate a knowledge and use of technology as it applies to Head Start management

 

 Program Information

 

Program Length

All courses are five weeks in length, three credits unless specified otherwise.  HS University students are Head Start working adults who can earn their degrees at their own pace and on their own schedule.  Most students attend part-time, and the normal time to complete this program is 4.5 years.

Cost information for HS University program is available at http://www.hsuniversity.org/cost_fees.html.  The tuition and fees for the entire program, at current tuition rates, are $47,400.  The total estimated cost for books and supplies for the entire program is $6,000.

 

For those HR managers setting up professional development budgets, a student should plan for approximately $11,000.00 per year for individual professional development/degree cost.
